Poplar Bowl

Poplar, but not very popular
I've probably said it here before, but I'll say it again: I like Poplar wood, at least some of it. According to Britannica, the Populus genus covers a range of trees common to our region (Northeast US). My best guess, with the help of The Wood Database, is that this piece of wood is Yellow Poplar, also known as Tulip Poplar.
Anyway, I was at a friend's house one evening, and he was generous enough to cut a chunk off a board he had. I could clearly see it was a Poplar board, but the color and grain I ended up with was quite a treat.

The dark grain is actually more green than what it appears here, which provides beautiful color and contrast.
This bowl ended up at about 6" in diameter, and 2" high.

So, I'm on the lookout for more Poplar for turning, especially Tulip Poplar or Rainbow Poplar. Who knows, if I keep touting its positive qualities and showing off its beauty, maybe I can help make it more...Poplar.
Fun fact: "The name Populus refers to the fact that the trees were often planted around public meeting places in Roman times." - source
